The project is presented to our studio in the context of the earthquake that struck our country, Chile, 2010. An earthquake with an intensity of 8.8 on the Richter scale, destroyed almost completely the regions of O'Higgins, Maule, Bio-Bio, La Araucania and RM.
Adobe construction is the most used building system in our Country, brought by the Spanish in the Colonization. Much of our architectural heritage, aesthetic and cultural, is made with materials that are unable to resist the seismic movements.
From this premise, it is fundamental for us to rescue these buildings affected, by using both traditional and contemporary techniques to recover the buildings to an original construction state.
Below is the more detailed proposal for restoration:
1. Recover the original structure, built two buttresses of origin had been demolished in the earthquake of 1985. A way to restore the original structure, with the original construction techniques brought by the Spanish.
2. Technical solution of construction details, in all registered cracks proceeded to weave adobe bricks (made on site), installing wooden reinforcements in each corner of the structure, union of vertices and horizontal wood career as well as the conservation of wooden elements in sight, all through construction details seen in the development work of unique quality and craftsmanship for each case.
3. Geogrid, the innovation of this proposal is based on the inclusion in the adobe structure, Geo-net, a plastic product used in mining processes, operating and improving the wall confining the resistance to traction. Converting the building into a unified element. Its plastic so allows an excellent relationship with Adobe moisture and structural quality. This process has been strongly developed by the Catholic University of Peru, where it has been legislated as part of the mandatory rules for adobe construccion.
